Etching and Intaglio Techniques

Etching is a technique that allows the printmaker to achieve wide tonal range and unlimited detail. Students, using zinc plates Beginning/ Intermediate will learn to produce images with line etching, aquatint, soft ground etching and drypoint techniques and how to print small additions. Lab fee $25 payable to instructor

Introduction to Monotype Printmaking
All Levels

Whether monotype or monoprint, “the painterly print” calls for work in color. Wide ranges of inking techniques, both abstract and realistic, aree experience with color is helpful. Lab fee $25 payable to instructor.

Intaglio Techniques
Intermediate/Advanced

Penny Barringer

Students refine their skills with a master printmaker. Color printing and many unusual techniques are covered. Students may pursue their own projects with guidance from the instructor.
Lab fee $25 payable to the instructor

Printmaking Workshops


Monotype Explorations

Penny Barringer

Explore the techniques used by Degas, Sargent, and Prendergast. Subtractive, additive, color blending and painterly techniques will be the focus of the workshop. Limit 10 students Lab fee $15

Collograph and Embossing

Penny Barringer

Collograph (printing from a collage plate) and embossing 93-D inkless printing) are covered, including plate making, intaglio, and relief inking techniques. A $30 lab fee, payable to the instructor, covers all supplies except plates, printing paper, and paper towels. Limit 8 students

Workshop will be offered in the Fall

Linoleum Cuts

Penny Barringer

A relief printing process that doesn't require a press to print, linoleum is an easy to cut alternative to wood. Limit 10 students. Lab fee $15

Workshop will be offered in the Spring

Jumpstart to Printmaking

Penny Barringer

This fundamentals workshop is a great place to start for beginners and an invaluable refresher course for the more experienced student. During the three days, all levels of artists gain an overview of the principles and techniques of this art form. Participants produce prints in several techniques including etching, relief, litho and monotype printing. Limit 8 students.

This class is designed for students with some background in printmaking, as well as for more advanced students. By working with a master printmaker students can refine their skills in color printing and various unusual techniques. Students may pursue their own projects with guidance from the instructor.

Lithography (stone & metal plate)

Penny Barringer

Lithography enables artists to use a wide range of techniques to achieve multiple prints including crayon and pencil shading, washes and pen and ink. Students learn to grind a stone and/or prepare a metal plate, develop an image and print a small addition. Lab fee $45 payable to instructor
